Shoes and Stuff

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 2, 2013 by kellizink

When a blog or magazine asks you to be in a feature or photo shoot, it is normally weeks in advance.

Clearly you want to look your best, or have your product look as appealing as possible in photos.

Well, when Racked Chicago asked me to be involved in a shoot for Shoe Week…I had 1 day notice. I said yes, not really thinking twice. Then I remembered I had just moved into a new apartment…and my closet was FAR from camera ready. In fact, as I took sample shots…panic set in. Let’s be honest, I have way more than I need…but many women in Chicago have closets 10 times cooler than mine. Mine will eventually have; a coat of Tiffany Blue paint, mini chandelier and shag rug. For now, it’s white on white on blah.

So we got creative. James Atkins, who shot the shoot and I decided to turn off the overhead lights and use candle light to create a soft glow.

We did a series of shots that were artistic and would take the focus off what wasn’t there and feature the cool stuff- the shoes.

I’m BEYOND happy with the way both the article and the photos turned out.

Hands down, my favorite photo.

I also loved this one, but it didn’t make the article.

You can check it here.

Moral of the story- be happy with what you have. Or shoot it in the dark.

Nike Plus Lunar Hyperworkout +

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on August 8, 2012 by kellizink

Nike has dun done it again.

First it was the Nike+ FuelBand- a wristband that tracks your steps, movement and calories.

Now they’ve added another member to the Nike+ Training Family- The Nike Lunar Hyperworkout+.

These shoes contain sensors in the base of the shoe that track how fast, high, hard and often you workout. Plus they’ve teamed up with some of the world’s top athletes like; Shawn Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, and Rafael Nadal.

Last night Nike’s team gathered a small group of ladies in the Nike Plus Fuel House in Lincoln Park for some education and demonstration of the new technology.

The presentations are all pretty interesting and makes you realize how much work goes into the new innovation.

Then we all woke up and did mental backflips when we were told we not only got to try out the new Ice colored Fuelbands and Lunar kicks…but we also got to take them home.

No need to bedazzle that black band- the Ice is here.

Nike sure knows how to make a gal feel special. Love the Lunar Hyperworkout’s colors.

They explained how easy the technology is to use- you basically pop the chip out of the box and place it under the sole inside the shoe, and sync it to your i phone like you would sync up a blue tooth device.

Then they had a few girls demo how the shoe tracks things like a vertical jump, jumping rope and a “fast feet” drill. It works.

Me and Mel feeling confident about the workout they were about to put us thru- well…Mel was…seeing as she just won the drill challenge.

We went outside and did the Allison Felix “pack” which was a 10 min workout…every 30 seconds a new drill was introduced and timed out for us. 10 mins may sound like nothing, but these workouts are designed to kick your butt- fast. And it did.

Post workout walking home, proper refreshments in hand.

Check out the new technology for yourself at the Nike Fuel House in Lincoln Park- it’s Free!

Just realized I forgot to post this.

Lisa Frame for the “Northside”, Coach AJ Pierzynski and myself for the “Southside”.

Thanks for an amazing game Nike!

Northside vs Southside

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on June 21, 2012 by kellizink

Remember when I tried out for my middle school softball team in 7th grade and made it?

No? Yeah- well…unless you are my mom…you probably don’t. Because I chose not to play due to some kind of conflict and I haven’t picked up a bat since.

To be honest I think they were desperate for players and that’s why I made it, cause last night when I picked up a bat at Slugger’s it was a disaster.

Rewind.

So Nike asked me to play in their Northside vs Southside Softball game led by AJ Pierzynski and Johnny Knox. The teams are made up of media peeps…and I am one of them.

Cue the bad decision. Just because someone is athletic does NOT mean they can play every sport.

So last night Shaun took me to the batting cages at Slugger’s* and I walked out with a huge bruise on my wrist.

In other words, this could be one big disasta.

If you want to witness it- come out to the Nike Fuel House at 6pm in Lincoln Park.

NFL and Nike

Monday night and Tuesday were a blur.

I got into NYC late Monday and checked into the beautiful Mondrian Soho. I wish I would have taken photos of the room and restaurant- it was stunning. I definitely will stay there again and recommend it 100 percent if you’re looking for a more quiet New York experience.

Tuesday morning I found myself on a huge coach bus with media from around the world. It kinda felt like going on a field trip with people you’ve never met, and I could hear everyone chatting as they got to know people around them. Most of us worked for some kind of blog- very smart move of Nike to tap into the bloggosphere.

We arrived to a movie set in Brooklyn and were led into a room that reminded me of an airplane hanger that had been transformed with large screens playing NFL Films material and rows and rows of the new Nike NFL apparel.

You know I had to peep my Lions gear

Everyone whipped out their i phones and cameras and began to take pics and record video to blast out on the internet- since we were the first to see this new gear.

Love the green and white JETS shoe- may need a pair to rock for Sparty games

I ran into some friends from the Miami Nike trip and we chatted and caught up while we waited to enter the next room. We watched the new ad campaign “Fast is Faster” and were led into a sound stage that had been transformed into a football field.

We were sitting in bleachers and this was our view

Then we heard from the top execs at Nike including CEO Mark Parker and President Charlie Denson.

The explained the new uniforms in detail and educated us on Nike’s history with the brand.  The first Nike shoe ever made was a rubber football cleat in 1972- so it was cool to hear how the brand has come full circle.

Then they brought out Super Bowl champ Victor Cruz to explain what he thought of the fashion makeover.

And finally- they marched out a player from all 32 teams- in their brand new uniforms.

Big Ben- I see you laughing

So bad ass. Some of the guys were giggling- having to stand still and pose for pics.

Then it was time to work.

I put my Nike Free’s to the test by running between two sound stages to grab interviews with each player.  Special thanks to Mike Leventhal and Bader TV for going above and beyond for us and loaning me a photog.

My favorite interview was with Victor Cruz- who had been swarmed by media the second he walked out. For those who haven’t worked in the TV business- I can’t even describe what it’s like to try to interview a player with 50 other members of the media. We refer to it as a “gang bang” if that paints a picture.

The media “gang bang” of a SB champ

That said- we let the rest of the media try for a sound bite with Cruz and knocked out five other players.

If you’re playing nice, then you walk up to the player you’d like to interview and politely let the journalists finish their interviews before butting in…and lucky for me- the girl before me asked Victor to salsa dance with her leading right into my question; “Would he ever do DWTS?”.

Jason Whitten was also very sweet, as was Champ Bailey.

And even though Alex Smith was done giving interviews- he allowed me to sneak in a few quick questions. (Thank you NFL Network for helping me build all these relationships)

Brian Urlacher surprised me the most- he was mellow and really nice and was 100 percent focused on football.

Most of the media were asking the guys about the upcoming season, and trades made in the off season…so I *hope* I was a breath of fresh air when I asked my fun fashion and pop culture questions. I think Champ was shocked I didn’t want to know about Manning/Tebow.

After I got most of the players, it was back on the bus and to the airport.

Thanks again to Nike- who always puts on a detailed, exciting and creative presentation for the media.

The video will be up later this week and I’ll post it here for those who’d like to see the finished product.

Nike NFL Launch

I’m heading to NYC tonight for the unveiling of Nike’s new NFL uniforms.

Per usual we have been given zero details except to be ready at 10 am tomorrow morning and that I fly back at 6pm. Also- I know that a lot of NFL players will be on hand most likely in uniform? Who knows. I can’t wait.

More details tomorrow.

I want to let these shoes speak for themselves. They are gorgeous.

Nike gifted me a few pair to give to “Spartan men in my life” so I gave a pair to my dude (who also went to MSU) and the rest go to the Michigan State Alumni Association to auction off for charity.

There is something awesome about surprising grown men with shoes and hearing them scream with joy.

Nike isn’t just a force in the athletic world, when it comes to launching new products- no one is more creative. Their most recent event felt like a scavenger hunt/game of Clue.

Last night shattered my perception on how brands do business. Here’s what went down:

9:00 am Intersport offices: A Nike bag arrives. Inside are: a pair of pants, a dri fit tee, socks, headbands, a hoodie and pair of red Nike Free shoes.

2:39 pm My desk at work: I begin to see other friends Facebook status’s pop up about the event and we began to G chat and email over what may go down since no details were provided on the event except to show up wearing the gear at 6pm sharp. We are nervous.

5:50 pm New Leaf Event Space: I am led up a staircase into a dark room where I sign a waiver to be filmed and am given a group number-5.  Everyone who walks up the stairs is a surprise, since none of us know the guest list.

6:21 pm New Leaf: We are led into a larger room and offered water and ice tea. We begin to realize that no alcohol means we will be getting physical. We huddle around our friends and make new ones. Lisa keeps jumping up and down and yelling ; “Field Day!”.

6:28 pm New Leaf: We take our seats on leather blocks and are treated to a presentation by Cindy Hamilton from Nike Marketing and the man who helped create the new Nike Fuel Band. The room is filled with musicians, artists, writers, jocks, hipsters and media. It’s a diverse mix of creative people.

6:29pm: I want, NEED, a fuel band. We are informed how the Fuel band works (in this dude’s sexy British accent): you set a goal for the day and try and meet it. Nike feels everyone is an athlete, and rewards for everyday activities like shopping, walking and even sex. It shows calories burned, and plugs in directly to your i Phone or computer to track progress. We are then fitted for bands and told we’d be trying them out- at Soldier Field.

6:55 ish pm Black Escalades: Team Five is crammed into an SUV heading for Soldier Field. Our team is made up of: Jessica Zwieg from Cheeky Chicago, Lisa Frame from Mugshot Monday, Nina Drake  a bad ass DJ, De’Mar Hamilton the drummer for The Plain White T’s, former Chicago Bear Jerry Azumah, and director Davy Greenberg.

our team- minus Davey who was camera shy.

7:15 pm Soldier Field- Visitor’s Locker room: We are sitting in the visitor locker room being told what was about to go down- we were going to go run drills, ON THE FIELD and kick field goals with Bear’s kicker Robbie Gould. Robbie addresses the group and we are lined up alphabetically to run onto the field. The guys are shamelessly snapping pics and video of the Bear’s kicker while he speaks- it’s kinda awesome.

7:20 pm Soldier Field- tunnel/field: As we approach the tunnel we see the lights of the field, a marching band and flags waving. As we run onto the field our name is announced over the loud speaker. Experience of a lifetime.

7:35 pm Soldier Field- field: The sleet and rain have stopped, and we all rotate between three stations of: kicking field goals, doing agility drills and catching touchdown passes. My field goal attempt was pathetic. Like really really bad. But who cares- we were all having a blast. All of a sudden this crew of “cool kids” (not me, but trust me William Beckett, Nick Scimeca, Johnny Minardi and De’Mar are COOL) were snapping pics, taking video and having real fun despite the chilly weather.

8:15 pm New Leaf: We are all back upstairs at New Leaf and track our progress on the Fuel Bands. We’re led upstairs where  choreographer Bravemonk is going to teach us two hip hop routines while DJ Maurice Joshua spins the soundtrack.

8:16 pm New Leaf dance floor inside my head: Sh$t this routine is hard. I really can’t dance. I used to be a cheerleader- what the F happened.

8: 45 New Leaf – dance floor: About 7 girls are left on the floor trying to nail the routine including Frame, April Francis and Susanna Negovan. And by *nail* I mean- trying not look like total fools dancing in front of our friends.  We are laughing, giddy and drenched in sweat. I had to walk it out three times because I almost threw up from the exertion of the intensive routine. Ok- to be fair I’d been on a juice cleanse since Monday and was about to die.

9:11 pm New Leaf: We all hug and say we wish every night out was more like this, all in the same comfy clothes, doing physical activity and bonding without alcohol.

It was one of the most memorable nights I’ve had in sometime and has changed my perspective on what “fun” is all over again.
