My dad is a pretty thoughtful guy.

Six months ago he decided that for my parents 40th Anniversary he was going to fly my brother in from San Fran and me in from Chicago…without my mom knowing.

He’s well aware of his children- our procrastination and tendency to gloss over details, so he sent around 20 emails with specific instruction and directions of the date, time and place to show up.

The night before the big surprise- I began to get paranoid that it would be ruined as well…considering Kyle’s company holiday party was in full swing and his flight was at 5:30am. I even went as far as to post some fake tweets and a FB status to throw Mom off.

At 5:30pm, the two of us sat at the Chop House in Ann Arbor- with a chilled bottle of champagne waiting for them to arrive- the hostess, and wait staff aware of the surprise.

When my parents walked up to the table my mom thought they were seating them with another couple (my parents go on a lot of cruises).

After looking at us twice without recognition- she finally realized it was us and burst into tears- resulting in the entire back half turning to see what the commotion was about.

We all knew after that reaction that:
a. the surprise was a true surprise.
b. dad’s gift was exactly perfect
c. it was worth the sneaking around and travel

For me it reassured me that even if Hollywood romances are falling apart left and right…some love lasts forever.

Happy 40th Mom and Dad!
